Tips for Keeping Your Teeth Clean When You Have Braces

One of the challenges of orthodontic treatments is keeping your teeth and gums clean. Braces make it more difficult to clean all surfaces, and as a consequence, there’s an increased risk of plaque and cavities developing during your orthodontic treatment.

1. Buy a soft toothbrush

Rough bristles may seem better at cleaning the debris, but they are less flexible, which means they may not reach all surfaces, especially when cleaning between brackets and wires. A soft toothbrush is gentler on your gums, which will allow you to brush more without fearing irritation or bleeding. 

2. Brush after every meal 

The best way to eliminate debris is to clean it off right away. If you have a diet high in carbohydrates, brushing after every meal is even more important, as the bacteria in your mouth break down carbohydrates and, as a result, create acids that wear down the enamel. The less time the food is stuck on your teeth, the less time your enamel is exposed to the acids. 

3. Floss regularly 

Flossing is a must since debris can easily get stuck around the wires and in between your teeth. If you dread regular flossing, there’s also the option of using a water flosser. If you don’t have much crowding, the stream of water coming from the water flosser may be enough to cleanse your teeth. 

4. Don’t skimp on the mouthwash 

Carrying a small bottle of mouthwash with you can be beneficial. While mouthwash can’t clean food debris, or at least not entirely, it can remove the debris left behind from fruit juices and other sugary drinks. 

5. Brush 30 minutes after a meal if you had acidic foods or drinks 

Diet plays a big role in the health of your teeth. Acidic foods and drinks make your teeth more sensitive, and brushing right afterward can do more harm than good. If you’d like to make your life easier, make sure you have these foods and drinks when you’re at home and have the time to wait another half an hour to brush.
